Transportation and mobility
Demand study and modal allocation model for interurban freight transportation.

We conducted a study that consisted of the development and provision of a freight transportation modal allocation model. The objective was to analyze the use of infrastructure to help determine investment priorities.

What the study covered

  • We identify the main cargo flows, including products, their origins and destinations.
  • We quantify the demand for transportation and logistics services.
  • We diagnose the current supply of transportation infrastructure and services, considering demand.
  • We developed a mathematical simulation model in the VISUM platform for load flows. This model can be updated according to changes in demand or supply and allows estimating the impact on the infrastructure in the short and medium term (up to 10 years).

Scope of the project

The project included the analysis of transport infrastructure supply and demand, as well as the determination of freight costs and prices. We also defined the modal choice functions. Finally, we delivered the Modal Allocation Model in the VISUM platform and took care of its calibration and operation.

This modal allocation model provided a key technical tool for decision making. It allowed for more efficient planning of infrastructure investments, optimizing the use of available resources.
