Sanitation and Drainage
Executive project for sewerage, rainwater drainage and streets of Ciudad de la Costa

Together with SAFEGE, we were contracted to develop the detailed design for the first phase of the sewer, stormwater, and road infrastructure in Ciudad de la Costa, Canelones, Uruguay. The study area, covering 2,150 acres, has flat topography and a projected population of nearly 100,000 residents by 2035. The zone presents a high groundwater table, and stormwater is discharged into the Río de la Plata.

Our work included planning for the construction bidding process, as well as the following components:

Sewer System

  • Networks and connections: We designed 317 km of secondary pipelines and 20,400 service connections.
  • Pumping stations and force mains: We planned 9 pumping stations with different flow capacities and 8 km of force mains.
  • Treatment and final disposal: The design of a secondary treatment plant for 350,000 residents and an outfall system composed of a 3.1 km onshore section and a 1 km underwater section discharging into the Rio de la Plata.

Stormwater and Road Infrastructure

  • Micro-drainage: We designed 490 km of semi-lined roadside ditches.
  • Macro-drainage: We included 29 km of channels and collectors, as well as 32 retention ponds.
  • Roads: We planned 290 km of roads with different cross-sections.

In addition to the technical planning, we carried out the required environmental impact studies to obtain the Environmental Authorization, as well as a socioeconomic evaluation to estimate the project’s profitability and secure financing from multilateral credit organizations.

This project allowed us to design a comprehensive solution for the sewer and road infrastructure of Ciudad de la Costa, facilitating its sustainable urban development.
