Sanitation and Revaluation Project in Juan Lacaze

We were hired to design a solution to the flooding problems in the Libertad de Juan Lacaze neighborhood in Colonia, Uruguay. We also worked on the revaluation of the left bank of the Cañada Blanco with a new river walkway. The 40-hectare project area is very flat, with an average slope of 0.2%.

In the middle of the last century, a containment dike solved the major flooding, but left the Libertad neighborhood without a way to evacuate the water, which causes flooding that affects the interior of the houses.

Our detailed design included:

  • Rainwater networks: 3 kilometers of networks, with diameters between 400 and 1200 mm, and rectangular in shape.
  • Pumping station: A rainwater pumping station with a capacity of 3.6 m³/s that discharges to the Cañada Blanco.
  • Lamination tank: A 1,500 m³ tank to control the flow.
  • Conditioning: The improvement of the bank of the gully and the creation of a fluvial promenade.

In addition, we conducted a socioeconomic and financing study so that the project could be submitted to the OPP-IDB.

This work allowed us to offer a complete technical solution and a financing plan to solve a flooding problem and improve the quality of life of the inhabitants of Barrio Libertad.
