Sanitation and Drainage
Diagnosis in the urban watershed of A° La Esmeralda

We worked on an infrastructure project for the urban watershed of the La Esmeralda stream, in the department of Río Negro. Our objective was to evaluate the effects of urbanization on the hydrological and hydraulic system of the stream and propose solutions to mitigate its effects.

Diagnosis and Modeling

To understand the problem, we conducted a topographic survey of 3.3 kilometers of the creek and its main tributaries, including 21 hydraulic works and the levels of the houses. With this information, we created a digital terrain model with contour lines every 0.5 meters.

We used specialized software to develop hydrologic and hydrodynamic models. The hydrological model was developed in HEC-HMS and the hydraulic model in HEC-RAS. This allowed us to simulate the operation of the system with different storm scenarios and boundary conditions, generating detailed maps of the flood zones.

The diagnosis confirmed that the existing infrastructure had insufficient capacity for the flow, which implied a low level of protection for the surrounding areas.

Proposals and Design

Based on the diagnosis, we designed and modeled different solution alternatives. We analyzed various combinations of layouts for the new conduits, including open and closed, grass and concrete channels. We also evaluated the implementation of works for upstream flow lamination.

As a result, we developed drainage guidelines that will allow for sustainable urban development in the area. The scope of our work included the delivery of the diagnosis, a preliminary project and the executive project of the works, which allowed our client to make informed decisions for the next stage of construction.

Our work allowed us to deliver a complete solution, from the detailed analysis of the situation to the proposal of a comprehensive plan to protect the community from future flooding.
