Traffic studies, feasibility studies for the Montevideo ring road

We carried out, in collaboration with the Spanish firm PROINTEC, the project for the construction of the Montevideo Collector Ring. This is a 20 km long project, with a budget of 60 million dollars. Our work included traffic, capacity and economic feasibility studies, as well as the preliminary design of several intersections and the Environmental Impact Study.

What did we do in the project?

Specifically, the tasks we performed included:

  • Traffic Studies: We conducted origin-destination surveys and classified vehicle and pedestrian censuses at 10 sites. From these data, we developed origin-destination matrices and surveyed travel times.
  • Preliminary projects: We designed the preliminary design of 11 traffic signalized intersections and two at-grade traffic interchanges.
  • Executive Projects: We developed the executive project for 5 km of two-lane urban roads, which included drainage, service roads, sidewalks and bicycle lanes. We also designed an at-grade crossing with the railroad and considered a future duplication of the roadways. In addition, we designed four at-grade intersections and an at-grade interchange at the intersection of Route 8 and Route 102.
  • Environmental Impact Study: We carry out the corresponding study.

Scope of the project

Our work focused on the technical and planning aspects of the project. We carried out traffic studies, preliminary drafts of the intersections, executive projects for 5 km of the Ring and its adjacent sections, and the executive project for the 4 intersections and an interchange. All this was complemented with the Environmental Impact Study.

Project impact

The planning of this collector ring provided a comprehensive solution for the city’s mobility. The project will improve vehicular flow and connectivity in one of Montevideo’s busiest areas.
