For the Intendencia de Maldonado, we carried out a comprehensive mobility study in the area of Maldonado, Punta del Este, and San Carlos. Our objective was to create a detailed origin-destination matrix and to understand the structure of trip origins and destinations, vehicle types, and travel purposes.
The study was divided into several phases. First, we surveyed freight transport flows through direct interviews with the main stakeholders. We analyzed information about trucks, cargo types, operation nodes, routes, and current regulations.
Then, we designed and implemented a traffic count and roadside origin-destination survey campaign. We determined the sample, monitored data quality, and processed the information to obtain partial matrices and a general matrix. In addition, we refined the traffic count database for capacity and safety studies.
We also conducted a survey campaign with public transit users. We processed this information to analyze user profiles. Using ticket sales statistics, we applied the Furness method to distribute trips and generate an origin-destination matrix by route.
Project Impact
The database and analyses produced are a key tool for the Intendencia de Maldonado to make decisions regarding traffic in the area. This information represents highly valuable “territorial intelligence” for urban and sectoral planning.
