Water resources and drinking water
Montevideo's potable water and sanitation master plan

We worked on the preparation of the Drinking Water and Sanitation Master Plan for the Montevideo metropolitan area, with the objective of providing OSE with a long-term program for the management and improvement of these services. The 18,000 km² study area did not include sanitation for the city of Montevideo, but did include drinking water supply and sanitation for the rest of the area.

Project Scope

The project was developed through several key studies:

  • Urban and Rural Planning: We carry out planning studies to understand the development of the area.
  • Water Resources: We carry out hydrological and hydrogeological studies and develop models of surface and groundwater resources.
  • Definition of Works: We defined the objectives and water quality standards. This included feasibility studies and a preliminary project for the supply and sanitation works, with an estimated cost of US$770 million.
  • Evaluation and Management: We conducted socioeconomic evaluations of projects and organizational and financial studies for OSE. We also analyzed the institutional management of the 13,500 km² Santa Lucía River basin.
  • Environmental Studies: We prepare a Preliminary Environmental Assessment and an Environmental Impact Study to ensure the sustainability of the proposals.

Finally, we prepared an implementation plan for the first stage program, with an estimated investment of US$480 million.

This work allowed us to create a complete and detailed roadmap for water management in the Montevideo metropolitan area, which will allow OSE to plan and manage its projects in the long term.
