Drinking water distribution network for Maldonado and Punta del Este

We were contracted to support the Engineering Department of UGD-OSE in the modeling of the main potable water distribution network of Maldonado and Punta del Este. Our objective was to deliver a calibrated model that would allow them to make operational decisions and accurately predict pressures within the network. The project was carried out in two phases: the development of the hydraulic model and its subsequent calibration.

Our work focused on the following tasks:

1. Development of the Hydraulic Model

  • Data collection: We gathered, analyzed, and processed network data, including pipelines of 160 mm or larger, as well as trunk mains and distribution tanks. In total, we modeled approximately 300 km of pipelines.
  • Data input: With the collected data, we built the hydraulic model using EPANET 2.0 software.
  • Initial simulation: We ran a preliminary simulation to ensure the model operated correctly without errors.

2. Model Calibration

  • Field data collection: For calibration, we conducted several pressure measurement campaigns across the network. At the same time, we collected hourly flow data provided by OSE on the days of the campaigns.
  • Adjustments: After data collection, we performed initial adjustments and selected key points in the network to verify pressures.
  • Final calibration: With the adjusted information, we achieved the final calibration of the model.

At the end, we delivered a calibrated and fully functional general model in EPANET, along with pressure maps at different times of the day and a detailed report of the work and results obtained.

This project allowed us to provide UGD-OSE with a management and planning tool for the water network of Maldonado and Punta del Este, facilitating decision-making for its operation.
